Exchange with others: I save a lot on foreign exchange transaction fees by exchanging money with another traveler or resident. Currency converters can be found online, so check before you trade. No fees involved, except maybe a glass of wine to make up for the small change difference.

Always ask first: If you can't find someone to exchange with, then always ask what the total exchange will be before you do an exchange at a foreign exchange outlet. Avoid changing money in hotels because most have crazy transaction charges.

ATMs: Don't bring wads of cash because ATMs are everywhere. Be sure to check fees before point of withdrawal from the ATM because you can be hit with charges on both ends: the foreign bank and your bank.
